$250,000 prize purse, the top surfing pros, intense paddle battles and macking barrels are all things that were absent from the 2013 Aloha Boardshop Honolulu Fish Fry. This event was designed to bring the local Oahu surf community together and be 100% FUN!
Fiberglass Hawaii had never sponsored an event like this before, but we decided to come on board because it was an event that brought the shapers, surfers and teams together. Let us explain…there were 19 shapers that donated fish type surfboards to the event which included, Dennis Pang, Mitsu Matsushita, Todd Pinder, Carl Schaper, Robin Johnston, Chronic, Setsu Masuda, and Glenn Minami. The event was open to all surfers and the 26 teams were made up of current local pros, regular dudes and pros from the past. Instead of hassling each other for waves, each team of four surfers was able to paddle out into the line up and trade off waves uncontested for their 15 minute heat. The team score was totaled and that’s how the winner was decided. It doesn’t get much more fun than that! Surfing Queens in Waikiki with only three other guys that are giving you waves on a beautiful sunny weekend is worth the entry fee alone.
While all of that fun was happening in the water, the Fiberglass Hawaii booth was raging with groms of all ages. We were giving away shirts, hats, sunglasses and the kids were decorating mini surfboards with Boardstix paint pens. Some of these little rascals scoped out our brand new Fiberglass Hawaii Shaping Pad and began shaping their little 8 inch surfboards into their dream boards. Another new product we were able to showcase was our Pro Shaper’s Square. These two tools are designed to be very affordable, durable and to keep shapers moving their craft forward.
After two days of talking story, giving product away, surfing and enjoying the camaraderie of the event we were worn out…and couldn’t be happier. We look forward to next year and other events like this one. Check out some of the pics of the guys shredding on the different types of fish boards.
